Taking over DNS

Once again, I'm attempting to become my own authoritative domain host. Hopefully, everything will go smoothly this time, now that the proper IPs are already floating around.

Architecture Update

I mentioned in a post a while back that I'd switched from mod_rewrite/mod_proxy for connecting Apache with Tomcat, and I finally got around to updating the Site Architecture document to reflect those changes, so once again, it is an actual reflection of reality.

More Changes

Well, I'm about to start the switch from connecting Apache and Tomcat with mod_rewrite to using mod_jk, which should yield much greater performance, as well has handle redirects properly (which mod_rewrite doesn't seem to, even with following the manual word for word). I'm also taking over mail and DNS hosting for all the domains [...]

Mail and DNS

I finally got a mail server (SMTP and POP) running on here, using a really nice "toaster" from Bill Shupp. The Courier (IMAP server) doesn't seem to work, but I know little about IMAP, and I didn't plan on using it, so I didn't spend much time troubleshooting.
I can now officially be reached at [...]

Updated Architecture Document

I updated the site architecture document to reflect the changes I've made since I wrote the original. The big change is that everything is now running through Tomcat for layouts and page counting. The "pages" are now nothing more than a few c:set tags to create some content pieces that are assembled by [...]

"Email Me" Page

I added an Email Me page for shooting me an email. My general preference has been for just an email link, but with the amount of spam I already get, I figure I'll take what precautions I can.

New Layout and Skin

As should be very obvious, I finally took the time to build an attractive skin/layout for my blog, rather than the handful of color tweaks to the default MovableType stylesheet that had qualified as customization until now. For whatever reason, the header and footer graphics don't look smooth, nor line up colorwise, on Windows. [...]

Site Architecture

I put together a document that explains the architecture behind this site, including some configuration snippets and a flowchart the explains how everything relates. Hopefully it will be understandable to those who haven't had first-hand experience with the guts of it.

Refining

I found a couple slight glitches with the way I integrated all my non-MovableType pages into the MovableType layouts (I'll write up how all that works at some point). The biggest offender was the lack of use of the 'blog' class on a DIV to add some margins around the page content, which pushed [...]

Web Usage Stats

In addition to the raw bandwidth stats that I'd previously made available, I set up actual web usage stats as well, using the most excellent Webalizer log analysis package. The first page is a summary of the last twelve months; detailed statistics are available by clicking on the month names in the table. [...]
